SUMMARY:"A River Out of Time" Virtual Film Screening and Talk
DESCRIPTION:The Green and Colorado river systems form the backbone of the American West. Once spanning a 1\,450-mile journey from the Rocky Mountains to the Gulf of California\, today\, none of the sediment-rich water reaches the Pacific Ocean. Instead\, its water lies stymied in reservoirs and siphoned off to feed and nurture 40 million people from Salt Lake to Los Angeles. One hundred and fifty years after John Wesley Powell’s historic descent of the Green and Colorado rivers\, an unlikely crew of scientists\, artists\, educators\, and river lovers repeated his journey on a trip that was simultaneously a celebration of modern river life and a critical look at how we interpret the Colorado River’s history and use its waters. As the demand we place on the water of the Colorado continues to exceed its supply\, we are forced to face uncomfortable truths about decisions made in our past. And we are reminded that the way we think about water—and all those dependent upon it—needs to shift if we want things to change for our future. \nPlease join Thomas Minckley\, Patrick Kikut\, and Along the Colorado curator Sapira Cheuk for a virtual screening of A River Out of Time and a discussion about the film and exhibition to follow. \nRegister

SUMMARY:Frank Gonzales: Sacred Spaces
DESCRIPTION:In the hustle and bustle of our busy lives\, we all need a place where we can go to reflect\, re-center\, and restore our energy. Whether this is a religious institution\, community gathering place\, or a nook in your home\, sacred spaces allow us to step outside of our everyday lives so that we can focus on our spirit. These spaces are rich with the symbology of what matters most to us\, a distilled expression of our most authentic selves. \nArtist Frank Gonzales has created a sacred space in his painting studio. Surrounded by books\, plants\, and artwork made by friends\, this is where he thrives. He brings this reverent energy to the artwork he creates\, making each canvas a sacred space for the plant and animal beings he represents. He distills incredibly complicated relationships in the natural world down to their core elements\, using color and movement to reflect on their truest ways of being. These meditations allow us to share in the artist’s wonder of the natural world and reflect on our relationship to it. \nExhibition Photos

SUMMARY:Untraditionally American: Kat Davis and Brianna Noble
DESCRIPTION:When conjuring up a mental image of a traditional American home\, some might envision a 1950s suburban house with a white picket fence\, perhaps with a dog and some children playing in the front yard. Versions of this stereotype have been playing out on television shows for nearly 70 years – from Leave it to Beaver to The Brady Bunch\, and Family Matters to Modern Family- but does it still resonate today? Fewer families are able to purchase homes due to rising costs and stagnant wages\, and many queer and non-binary people are redefining what family means to them by forming familial bonds outside of their blood relations. For many\, the stereotypical American Dream depicted in media and pop culture is a narrative that no longer fits\, and they are finding freedom by writing their own story. \nArtists Kat Davis and Brianna Noble were raised in what they perceived to be traditional American homes\, but as adults\, their lives are anything but traditional. For this exhibition\, both of the artists dive into their respective domestic spaces to redefine what living the American Dream looks like from the inside out. \nExhibit Photos

SUMMARY:Creations from Within\, Vol. 2
DESCRIPTION:Taking inspiration from the solo albums of hip hop artists\, Edgar 8ahau Fernandez uses Creations from Within\, Vol. 2 as an opportunity to showcase his commitment to his craft and display ten years of artistic growth since his first solo exhibition in 2013. Disrupting the myth of the lone creative genius\, Fernandez invited a group of artists with diverse talents to collaborate on the exhibited pieces\, adding new perspectives and context to his artworks. The contributions from his collaborators are like features\, samples\, or guest producers on a hip-hop album\, each facet further proof that no one makes great work alone. \nThe works in Creations from Within\, Vol. 2 explore the stream-of-consciousness approach that has helped Fernandez express his most authentic self. The disparate works are unified through a symbolic color palette that visually and conceptually connects the images: gold represents light and energy; black symbolizes balance and groundedness; red indicates resilience and ancestral wisdom.  He hopes viewers can tap into their own creative power to transform their stories\, their perspectives\, and their futures. \nArtist Gallery Hours \nFernandez will be holding special weekly viewing hours until the close of this exhibition. Though visitors are welcome to stop by anytime the gallery is open\, Fernandez will be available to give individual tours to patrons at the following dates: \nMonday\, Sep 18th\, 1 – 4pm\nWednesday\, Sep 27th\, 10am – 2pm\nWednesday\, Oct 4th\, 10am – 2pm\nWednesday\, Oct 11th\, 10am – 2pm\nWednesday\, Oct 18th\, 10am – 2pm \nClosing Reception \nClose out this exhibition with us on Friday\, October 20\, 5:30-7:30pm! Fernandez will be present to answer questions and discuss the works with visitors. Afterwards\, stick around for the Las Cafeteras show at the Chandler Center for the Arts! \nExhibition Photos

SUMMARY:Unbound
DESCRIPTION:Image courtesy of Diyar Al Asadi \nThere is an unspoken sense of responsibility shouldered by artists who are people of color. Every piece these artists make is a story first told during the creation process\, and then again when reimagined through the eyes of viewers. While each work remains the personal expression of an individual artist\, it also becomes representative of a community – the voice of many. \nFor these artists\, it becomes second nature to take on the role of representative in addition the role of creator. Outside of their communities\, they know their work will always be experienced as a window into what can feel like another world. While there is a satisfaction in fulfilling this role and welcoming viewers into these unique experiences – whether joyous or uncomfortable – we must not forget the beauty and joy that comes purely from the act of creating. \nAcross the variety of media represented within this show\, what unites these artists is the level of personality present in their work. While each artist has a practice of embedding their culture and history within their work\, the pieces bring forward the artists as individuals and show us what they find beautiful and meaningful.  These paintings\, sculptures\, photographs and videos invite viewers in close and reveal something new each time. The artists have\, if just for a moment\, become unbound from the responsibility of representation and allowed themselves to be not just representatives for their communities\, but themselves. \nCurated by Alison Auditore \nExhibiting Artists:\nDiyar Al Asadi\nKatherine Del Rosario\nPiersten Doctor\nAshley Macias\nFarnaz Mansouri\nBrianna Noble\nMaria Rivas\nRembrandt Quiballo\nCora Quiroz \nExhibition Photos

SUMMARY:Fixations
DESCRIPTION:From tessellating Portuguese tiles to Yayoi Kusama’s famous dots\, artists have found inspiration in recurring patterns for centuries. Some are intrigued by aesthetics\, while others find ritual and rhythm in the repetition. Fixations highlights artists’ obsessions in a visible\, tangible way. \nUsing various media\, four Arizona-based artists meticulously and compulsively create artwork in the hope of finding solace in duplication and iteration. Hyewon Yoon creates pointillist renderings of Korean mountainscapes to curb her homesickness. Talia Dudley reconciles her dreams through portals found throughout her artwork. The patterns of Denise Yaghmourian’s large fiber artwork are formed through intuitive meditation. Lastly\, Alexandra Bowers calmed her pandemic anxiety by meticulously creating over 800 feather paintings. With each dot\, stitch\, and line\, these artists reclaim peace in a chaotic world. \nExhibition Photos

SUMMARY:Art Quilts: Breaking Rules\, Honoring Tradition
DESCRIPTION:Image: Vicki Conley\, Tree Rings \nFor our 28th annual Art Quilts exhibition\, the tension between pushing boundaries versus adhering to tried-and-true methods plays out in fiber form. We invited rule-breakers and traditionalists alike to interpret the theme in a variety of ways\, including applying it to physical techniques\, materials\, construction methods\, personal narratives\, or commentary on social\, cultural and political concerns. In addition to traditional quilting fabrics\, materials may include alternative substrates like wood\, paper\, or metal. All submissions – traditional\, unconventional\, or a combination of both – were considered for craftsmanship\, originality\, design\, and concept. \nThis exhibition was juried by Shelly White\, a Fiber/Mixed media artist and museum-arts educator. Using hand-dyed and printed textiles\, found papers and maps\, she creates contemporary artworks that honor the spirit of traditional quilting. Within the concept of navigation\, her work addresses ways in which we move through and across real and imagined geographies and the emotional passage of time. Shelly works as the Education Specialist for Mesa Contemporary Arts Museum in Mesa\, AZ and has exhibited in numerous local and national venues. \nhttps://shellywhitestudios.com/ \nhttps://www.instagram.com/shellywhitestudios/ \nExhibiting Artists \nSusan Allred\, Linda Anderson\, Betty Busby\, Abby Christensen\, Vicki Conley\, Denise A Currier\, Heidi Dauphin\, Karla Elling\, Diane English\, Linda Engstrom\, Laurie Fagen\, Victoria Findlay Wolfe\, Debra Goley\, Betty Hahn\, Marla Hattabaugh\, Janet Hiller\, Debra Kay\, Shari Keith\, Patty Kennedy-Zafred\, Shelley Koss\, Linda Laird\, Linda McCurry\, Margot McDonnell\, Anne Moats\, Anne Muñoz\, Frances Murphy\, Frauke Palmer\, Denneen Peterson\, Wendy Raisanen\, Redfox\, Sue Reno\, Judith Roderick\, Shelley Ann Rothgeb\, Brenda H Smith\, Aimee Smythe\, Linda Stern\, Ann Turley\, Claire Victor\, Rosanna Lynne Welter\, and Martha Wolfe \nBreaking Rules\, Honoring Tradition Catalogue\nTake the exhibit home with you! SUMMARY:Nuance/Nuisance
DESCRIPTION:In the overwhelmingly urban Phoenix Valley\, the cacti and coyote of the desert can often feel distant – like a backdrop to our daily lives. As we drive air-conditioned cars between air-conditioned houses and air-conditioned jobs\, the environment can go woefully unnoticed and sometimes unappreciated\, even if it is physically close. The artists in Nuance/Nuisance invite viewers to roll down their windows and connect with the natural world that surrounds them. \nWhen Daniella Napolitano moved here from the Southeast\, she was surprised to learn that many of the long-time residents she met could not name a single native animal. In response\, she created prints and posters that use humor to call attention to the local fauna. Arizona native Gina DeGideo’s photo installations exude a sense of meditation while moving throughout the landscape as she pays homage to the overlooked parts of her natural surroundings. Rebecca Pipkin’s site-responsive work methodically documents the effects of illegally dumped plant waste in the South Mountain Preserve. The stark contrast between native and non-native flora evident in her artwork highlights the impact we have on nature. \nWe all exist as creatures in an ecosystem\, whether we think about it or not. So\, the next time you’re hiking a trail\, on a walk in your neighborhood\, or even just sitting on your patio\, take a moment to reflect on your connections to your surroundings\, and what affect you would like to have on them. \nExhibition Photos

SUMMARY:Ties that Bind
DESCRIPTION:Image courtesy of Philip Gabriel Steverson \nFamily: a six-letter word that can spark happiness or dread in a person’s heart. \nFamilial ties are tenuous and complicated\, and every family unit looks different. Some family relationships are merely blood connections\, while others are deep bonds built on decades of love and mutual support. Complicating the family dynamic further\, each of us has to navigate how we will carry our family’s history and the traditions we inherit from our ancestors. How we grow up and who we are surrounded by as we mature play major parts in how we navigate the world as adults. \nTies that Bind examines the drama\, trauma and joy that familial relationships bring to our lives. Benjamin Selby and Philip Gabriel Steverson aim to reconcile parental relationships fraught with generational trauma; Amanda Mollindo attempts to comprehend how cyclical patterns repeat throughout generations; Karen Nazario Moranchel\, Jisun Myung and Sallie Scheufler explore the pressures and expectations that are placed upon them by their family or parents; and Lindsey Rothrock and Heidi Dauphin delve into their family histories in an attempt to better understand themselves. Although the exhibiting artists’ approaches and media vary widely\, all are seeking to resolve their family ties on their own terms. \nExhibiting Artists: \nHeidi Dauphin\, Amanda Mollindo\, Karen Nazario Moranchel\, Jisun Myung\, Lindsey Rothrock\, Sallie Scheufler\, Benjamin Selby and Philip Gabriel Steverson \nExhibition Photos
