SUMMARY:Lurking: Valerie Navarrete
DESCRIPTION:How do you bring scientific thought to life? How do you explain the mystics of the world in a tangible way? These are some of the questions that Valerie Navarrete is grappling with in her newest body of work. \nNavarrete has always had a profound love for both the arts and sciences. In college\, she double majored in painting and molecular cellular developmental biology. In her graduate program\, Navarrete began researching epigenetics\, the study of how your behaviors and environment can cause changes that affect how your genes work. It was through this research that she discovered CH Waddington\, a scientist that commissioned artists to create landscapes based off his theories and research. This unconventional approach appealed to Navarrete and\, eventually\, this became the framework for her own paintings. \nUtilizing her own research and inherited histories of scientific thought\, these otherworldly\, brightly colored landscapes began appearing on her canvases. Simultaneously\, Navarrete was trying to reconcile the human experience in all its pluralities. Moving beyond her knowledge and research of epigenetics\, Navarrete was trying to understand the duality of both the mystical and imperial in her own beliefs. Throughout her landscapes\, moments of clarity begin to form with the use of incredibly detailed renderings of self and animals. The paintings begin floating in and out of lucidity through the use of the tight and loose mark making. The eyes found throughout each of the paintings are Navarrete’s own psyche acting as both a voyeur to this new frontier but also the witness to a new understanding of self and human existence\, constantly lurking into the abyss. \n  \nOpening Reception:\nFriday\, October 30\, 6-8pm

SUMMARY:Art Quilts 31: Constructed Softly
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition considers how textiles build meaning through softness\, layers\, mark making\, and time—honoring processes often coded as feminine while welcoming all makers and interpretations—honoring voices often hidden and silenced through the open expression of ideas. Through layering\, construction\, and stitch\, these soft materials may be transformed to challenge hierarchies\, elevate overlooked labor\, and assert the quiet force of making as an act of presence and power. \n“This theme resonates with me on a personal level. Having a background in architecture and construction management\, I struggle with the conflict between the perceived masculine world of architecture and my artwork. My career in architecture was very industrial focused. While my artwork inherently focuses on nature and organic forms. These two ideas feel worlds apart\, but collide in my consciousness. My latest works have been a reflection on the collision of these two worlds.”- Juror\, Shelley Ann Rothgeb \nHow will you interpret “Constructed Softly”? You are invited to interpret this theme from your own perspective. Challenge stereotypes\, find your own voice and explore the power in your work. Artists are encouraged to think broadly about layered and stitched fiber works that explore construction through softness\, fiber technique and accumulated labor. \nAbout the Juror\nShelley was the sixth generation raised on her family farm in Northern Indiana where she inherited a tradition of making. She was the second in her family to graduate from college after her grandmother completed a degree in Commercial Art at the Fort Wayne Art School in the 1930’s. Following in her Grandmother’s footsteps\, Shelley attended one year at the Otis College of Art and Design studying fine art. Then\, completed a degree in Architecture at the College of DAAP at the University of Cincinnati. \nShe continued to pursue artistic endeavors while working and raising a family\, but finally rediscovered her passion for fiber art in 2019.
