They came to ceramics at different stages of their lives: Al Pace received his MFA at Arizona State University then taught ceramics for most of his professional life at Chandler High School. Clay Martinez\, Darrell Thomas Menlove\, and Tom Budzak were students of Mr. Pace’s early on\, and Kathleen Escobedo began her journey in ceramics just before her retirement. SUMMARY:Arizona Watercolor Association (AWA) Fall Juried Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Reception with the artists: Friday\, October 11\, 6 – 8 p.m. \nThis exhibition will include watercolor paintings and other types of water-based media.  An organization of nearly 300 Artists\, AWA has been active for 60 years\, mentoring and presenting the works of some of Arizona’s most talented artists. SUMMARY:Through Each Other's Eyes
DESCRIPTION:Opening reception with the artists: Saturday\, September 7\, 6 – 8 p.m. \nRecepción con las artistas: Sábado\, el 7 de Septiembre\, 6 – 8 p.m. \nThrough Each Others Eyes™ began in 1988 as an artistic element of the first “Japan Week” sponsored by the Phoenix Sister Cities Commission.  The concept then—as it continues to be today—is for two Phoenix photographers to visit another country\, stay with host photographers in that country\, and document the cultural life:  the people and the environment.  The two Phoenix photographers would then host two photographers from abroad and guide them to people and places in Arizona\, with the result being an exhibition of 80 photographs:  20 from each photographer.  The exhibit is then displayed multiple times in both the United States and abroad with the hope that all of us can learn to understand and appreciate a different culture through photography. \nAfter five annual exhibitions with Japanese photographers\, Through Each Others™ began an exchange with photographers in Hermosillo.  The first exhibit was held in Hermosillo in 1995\, traveling to Phoenix in 1996.  The exhibit displayed here marks the 9th exchange TEOE presentation between Phoenix and Hermosillo photographers\, and through multiple displays in Arizona and Mexico more than 200\,000 people have attended TEOE exhibits. \nThe organization\, controlled by a President and Board of Directors in Phoenix\, became a non-profit corporation in 1999 and has now completed exchange exhibits with photographers in 11 cities around the world:  Chengdu (China)\, Baguio (The Philippines)\, Havana (Cuba)\, Ennis (Ireland)\, Edinburgh (Scotland)\, Catania (Sicily)\, Prague (Cech Republic)\, Grenoble (France)\, and Cairns (Australia)\, in addition to Himeji (Japan) and Hermosillo.  These exchanges have led to close friendships among the photographers\, and images of high quality showing the people and environment of the exchange cities. \nEspecially at this time\, with political messages of hostility being voiced along the U.S. – Mexico border\, it is important to display images that help to unite\, and not divide\, the people of both countries.  This exchange exhibit with the photographs of Juan Casanova and Dionisio Corral of Hermosillo\, and Brandon Sullivan and Gina Santi of Phoenix\, clearly demonstrates how much we have in common\, and how warmth and kindness permeates both of our cultural heritages. \nErrol Zimmerman \nEx-president and cofounder of TEOE \n\nThrough Each Others Eyes comenzó en 1988 como una actividad artística de la primera “Semana Japonesa” patrocinada por la Comisión de Ciudades Hermanas de Phoenix(Phoenix Sister Cities Comission). El concepto de entonces – que continua hoy en día – es que dos fotógrafos de Phoenix visiten otro país\, se queden con anfitriones fotógrafos en ese país\, y documenten la vida cultural: la gente y su entorno. DESCRIPTION:Opening Reception with the Artists: Saturday\, April 6\, 6 – 8 p.m. \nTOGETHER features artworks by photographer Kari Wehrs and sculptor Nathaniel Lewis\, exhibiting alongside one another for the first time. Wehrs’s series “Shot” is comprised of tintype photographs of recreational shooters she meets in the Arizona desert.  After Wehrs’s subjects pose with their weapons\, she gives them the option to use her images as targets\, creating a participatory shared experience resulting in unique photographic objects. While the clothing and vehicles in the photographs are contemporary and relatable\, the Civil War era process recollects images of soldiers at war with their fellow countrymen. Nathaniel Lewis’s sculptures also examine divisive political topics and concepts of otherness\, but with a tongue-in-cheek humor. His “Little Terrors” series features brightly colored versions of tools of war that are just slightly more child-oriented than commercially available products\, urging viewers to question what they accept as normal and acceptable. DESCRIPTION:Reception with the Artists: Friday\, March 8\, 6 – 8 p.m. \nPainstaking attention to detail\, ornate organic curves\, and meditative studio practices unite the works of Dani Godreau and Vivienne Lux in the exhibition Meticulously Maximal. Godreau’s crowded\, repetitive\, cut paper patterns become challenges to gendered labor expectations upon closer inspection\, and Lux’s bright\, hand-drawn swirls that may first appear as simple colorful designs reveal layers of rococo-styled typography with careful examination.
