“Wolf-Mother and the Eschaton” by artist Hannah Cisneros✨🖊

This powerful ink drawing delves into apocalyptic anxieties into alchemical willpower. Through the use of intricate stippling and line work, Cisneros is able to enter a meditative state and explore the merging of opposites such as light and dark.

This piece embodies a journey of integration of a new identity. Including themes of the Wolf-Mother and the merging of Anima and Animus explored through the experience of pregnancy. For Hannah Cisneros, motherhood and non-binary identity surpass traditional boundaries and create a space where both the feminine and masculine not only coexist but nurture each other.

Cisneros writes “It is a philosophical and spiritual position: expansive, generative, nutritious, like the She-Wolf’s dripping breast. Not the One, not the Other, but a Secret Third Thing.”

M|otherworlds artist, Fatema Abizar reflects on the transformative journey of becoming a mother🖌✨

In her ongoing project, “Amma/Mama”, she captures the undeniable joy alongside the inexplicable fear that is brought with the new role as a mother. Her work is an accumulation of painting, collage, and machine drawing, documenting every minute of a 24-hour day that offers a look into her experience of motherhood.

Through this series, Abizar explores the contrasts between her cultural upbringing and the narratives around childbirth and motherhood in the West while allowing her to embrace mindfulness and do her best to be present during the more challenging moments.

This artwork allows us to reflect on the beauty of a new self, emerging after birth—a balance between mourning the past and embracing the future with curiosity and excitement.

Check out Swapna Das’ ceramic pieces in our M|otherworlds exhibit!!✨

When artist Swapna Das became a mother, everything shifted, including her art. After finding that her 2D artwork no longer resonated with her, Das stepped away and found herself more drawn to the tactile intricacies of clay. Vessels, chords, and coils—forms that hold, connect, and unravel. Each piece reflects the emotional intimacy of early motherhood. These sculptural forms reflect the emotional complexity of this new reality and helped process those complexities in her matrescence journey.

It speaks to the contradictions of care:
Joy and exhaustion,
Connection and isolation,
Control and surrender.

Through clay, Das explores the at once delicate and the unsettling. She shapes a new reality where the personal experience touches the collective.

New artwork from our M|otherworlds exhibit by artist Adia Jamille, a powerful fiber series titled “Progeny” that explores identity, loss, resilience, and joy. Each piece a tribute and reflects the unique emotional experience tied to her three children who shaped her journey through motherhood.

Trigger Warning: Infant loss is referenced in this series

“Radiant” speaks to the excitement that comes with taking the first leap into motherhood.
“Illuminant” captures a seismic shift—profound grief, immense strength, and the deep love that followed the devastating loss of her second born.
“Exuberant” celebrates healing and a renewed joy that came with the birth of her third child—her first daughter—and a returned sense of self, beginning to honor her own needs.

By reflecting on each pregnancy, Jamille invites the lessons that each one brought her and how they have transformed her. “I feel that each child was and is ‘a gift that keeps on giving.’”
