These are some of the questions that Valerie Navarrete is grappling with in her newest body of work. Navarrete has always had a profound love for both the arts and sciences. In college, she double majored in painting and molecular cellular developmental biology. In her graduate program, Navarrete began researching epigenetics, the study of how your behaviors and environment can cause changes that affect how your genes work. OMG MSG: Food, Art, and the Asian Diaspora
Vision Gallery 10 E Chicago St, Chandler, AZ, United StatesFrom specialty matcha drinks to ube donuts to boba shops on nearly every corner, diasporic Asian food has infiltrated the mainstream culture and transformed the culinary landscape across the United States. Yet, the food is still plagued with misconception and discrimination. Through an artistic lens, this exhibition will attempt to dispel some of the fallacies surrounding Asian ingredients, celebrate its cultural significance, and discuss food as legacy.
