Van Horne turned to her camera, Cole sat with her mosaic art and Durning worked on her puzzle mashups. At the city-run Vision Gallery in Downtown Chandler, a show gives them a platform to display their work. Just in time for summer, Vision Gallery presents À La Mode, featuring paintings by Caroline Estelle. Images and notions of summer can evoke a sense of joy and escapism. With warmer weather, people feel more liberated, but as the articles of clothing become smaller, the societal pressures to have an “acceptable” body grow larger. “Through saccharine colors and hyper-realized forms, Estelle embraces the idealized notions of summery scenes,” says Peter Bugg, visual arts coordinator, City of Chandler. “Look closer and you start to notice that the bodies in the images are distorted and uncharacteristic of the idealized female forms found in advertisements and art history.”

By Lynn Trimble Familiar faces from Mario to Ms. Pac-Man are coming to Chandler as part of a new exhibit that blends street art with arcade games. “Two Players, Two Quarters” will feature work by Tempe artists Such and Champ Styles, who also happen to be father and son. By Kevin Reagan Staff Writer Chandler’s newest downtown mural fuses two artistic styles to present a timeline of the city’s history. Located in the breezeway next to Saba’s Western Wear, the mural takes the abstract, geometric patterns of Joey Salamon and combines them with realistic portraits painted by Cam DeCaussin. Rainbow streaks stretch across the breezeway’s wall and guide the viewer’s eye through a series of pictures meant to be symbolic of Chandler’s first 100 years as an incorporated city.
