Seven Ways to Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month in Metro Phoenix

2020-10-06T14:25:50-07:00

By Lynn Trimble Art rooted in Hispanic, Chicano, and Latinx culture is a fascinating and integral part of life in metro Phoenix. Even so, people don't always make time to explore it. Hispanic Heritage Month, which runs from September 15 to October 15, is a great time to educate yourself. You'll find fewer formal Hispanic Heritage Month celebrations around town this year due to COVID-19, but you've still got plenty of great options. ‘Al Son Que Me Toquen’ Vision Gallery Opens Saturday, October 10 Vision Gallery is showing recent paintings by Emily Costello and Frank Ybarra, whose depictions of everyday life celebrate

New IN FLUX Public Art Means More Ways to Explore Art Outdoors Amid COVID-19

2020-08-19T13:25:14-07:00

Thanks to Lynn Trimble for writing about the new cycle of IN FLUX artworks around the city, including Roommates by Nick Rascona here in Chandler! ... It’s been more than three decades since artist Joan Waters moved to Phoenix, where she found landscapes and light that infused her large-scale abstract paintings with fresh perspective. But it was a battle with breast cancer that gave her time to reflect on her art practice, and a community college art class that equipped her with the skills to begin working with metals. Today, Waters is one of several artists whose work is featured in

À La Mode

2020-05-22T16:47:48-07:00

Just in time for summer, Vision Gallery presents À La Mode, featuring paintings by Caroline Estelle. Images and notions of summer can evoke a sense of joy and escapism. With warmer weather, people feel more liberated, but as the articles of clothing become smaller, the societal pressures to have an “acceptable” body grow larger. “Through saccharine colors and hyper-realized forms, Estelle embraces the idealized notions of summery scenes,” says Peter Bugg, visual arts coordinator, City of Chandler. “Look closer and you start to notice that the bodies in the images are distorted and uncharacteristic of the idealized female forms found in advertisements and art history.”

They’ve been working on the exhibit since late December, creating portraits of iconic video game characters and other pieces for the show. “We want to ... help people time-travel back to the age of arcade games,” Such says. We found the artists laying out the artworks on Valentine’s Day inside a Tempe school

New Chandler mural tells the city’s history

2020-02-04T16:26:30-07:00

By Kevin Reagan Staff Writer Chandler’s newest downtown mural fuses two artistic styles to present a timeline of the city’s history. Located in the breezeway next to Saba’s Western Wear, the mural takes the abstract, geometric patterns of Joey Salamon and combines them with realistic portraits painted by Cam DeCaussin. Rainbow streaks stretch across the breezeway’s wall and guide the viewer’s eye through a series of pictures meant to be symbolic of Chandler’s first 100 years as an incorporated city. Salamon, a Michigan-based muralist known for his dynamic zig-zag patterns, described the new artwork as a twist on classical and modern
